Do you think this is right?
They should be made to work FULL STOP! 5 hours a day? That isn't working it's a part time fiddle! Sod their resentment - what about the victims of the crimes???? They don't get half as well looked after cos these SCUMBAGS prey on the old and easy targets who get sod all when these "people" (?) have taken away memories or feelings of safety!
If your not a wet prison rights activist then perhaps you know someone who is!

In response to:Prisoners' Wages

Working in a prison I can talk about this subject with confidence.
We currently spend about £1.60 per prisoner for 3 meals a day. Their meals are very basic and lacking in substance so most supplement this by purchasing 'tuck' at corner shop prices with what little money they earn.

When I say earn I mean earn. Most work 5 hours a day for about £2.40 and monies made from their endeavors go back into the Government coffers. From their 'earnings' they have some stopped for 'rental' of their TV, they can top up phone credit and buy toiletries. In some cases they receive money from family or friends but most have to rely on their earnings to get by.

If they refuse to work they only get £1.50 a week unemployment pay so most work under sufferance.

Work in a prison is often mindless activities involving putting things into bags, the sort of jobs that used to go to the far east. One job I had to once oversee involved threading red cord through a hole in a calender and tying a knot.

I am not a wet prison rights activist but if you want to stop them from re-offending once released you have to prepare them to fit in with society and learn the benefits of working. All that they feel now is a resentment of society and a need to get 'even' when released so perpetuating their criminal intent.

In response to:Prisoners' Wages

Yess but the amount the prisoners get is still more than the services ( trust me I know ) Imagine having to work for your money when your used to stealing whatever you want - it must be hard diddums!!!!!!!! If they hadn't done anything wrong then they wouldn't be in prison!
Yes i also know about buying kit to supplement issue so don't even bother! Each Gov takes it in turns to run down the Armed Services yet still demand higher operational performance with less equipment and man power! Oh yeah and when ever the Ambulance or Fire Brigade fancy a strike we get called in to cover those as well, don't forget! And they also get paid more than us!

In response to:Prisoners' Wages

You're wrong there - the food they get in a whole day costs less than one school dinner and the miserable 'pocket money' is earned by learning stuff and working, to teach them that it takes graft to improve your situation. They spend it on bread & spread to bump up the crap dinners, or else on teabags or tobacco.
Anyway my point was that someone up top decided they would get a rise, told them all about it, and now some poor bastard 9-5 employees like workshop managers are landed with telling them all to suck it up and go without. I'd want danger money.
:-)
(Don't even get me started on our soldiers, having to buy their own private life insurance, hunt for equipment on e-bay etc etc. Labour almost bankrupted the country last time they were in power, as well, didn't they?)

In response to:Prisoners' Wages

Prisoners are in prison for a reason - tough, build a bridge and get over it!
